A man walked a girl to her doorstep after a lovely first date. He got up the nerve and leaned in to kiss her. She withdrew, saying, “I don’t kiss on the first date.”

Couples break up for a number of different reasons. Among them the I’m in love with someone else reason, the I don’t love you anymore reason and the I just couldn’t love you reason.
Somehow, the last one is the most painful among the three. At least with the other two, he actually loved you. The third one? You tell him you love him and he can’t say it back. There’s no love at all. And it’s not from lack of trying, either. More often than not, he just couldn’t.
Why is he staying in the relationship, then? Because something in the back of his mind keeps telling him that there’s a chance. There’s a chance that he could feel something more for the person he’s having the relationship with. Give it time and it might actually work. That was his line of thinking. You could be happy with her.
You could not you would. That’s where the difference lies. He’s grasping on to something that even he is not sure of. He’s not certain if the relationship would work out but he’s staying because there’s a chance it could work out. It’s just a chance, a possibility. There’s also the risk that it wouldn’t work.
What happens when he realizes he just couldn’t? That’s the time he starts to contemplate leaving the relationship. It would be painful, of course, what break up isn’t? But from his point of view, it’s better to end things now than make it worse in the long run.
But what he didn’t know was that it is worse now. He gave her hope. He made her believe for something that couldn’t be. And by leaving her, he is throwing away her love.
And sometimes, the only way she could cope was to hurt him the way he had hurt her.
